Mural by Puppies Puppies (Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo)

Horizontal stripes that taper downwards in vibrant colors characterize this mural. The title of the work makes multiple references, including to the so-called trans flag (in the version by activist Raquel Willis). Puppies Puppies uses subtle gradations of brown tones, whose shades were borrowed from Fenty's makeup shades. When Rihanna offered people of all skin colors a suitable makeup shade for the first time in her Fenty beauty line, it was both a political statement and a brilliant marketing move. The mural is a powerful plea for diversity. It plays with optical illusions, similar to Op Art, and creates a shimmering field of color. It leads into the intertwining of art and commerce, political activism and entrepreneurial calculation. It seduces and unsettles in equal measure: flying the flag can be complicated.
