What space does a surface, a body take up? How can we as viewers place ourselves in relation to that space?
Questions of balance, movement and static equilibrium are taken up mainly by abstract works. The answers they propose are quite diverse, reduced to their essentials and yet highly complex. The common elements in this spatial situation, which sculptures and paintings have been addressing ever since the 1960s, are equilibrium and dynamic impetus, stability and tilt, volume and opening.
